3D Design Graduates showcase their work at Milan Design Week 2014
Last week a collective of current students and recent graduates from Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges (CCW) showcased their latest design work at Ventura Lambrate in Milan, Italy. Ventura Lambrate is a project organised by Organisation in Design and has taken place during Milan Design Week each year since 2010. It is a curated and established area for pioneering designers to showcase their work to the industry. The Milan Design Week is the most important and renowned design event in the world; for more than 50 years this event has announced the start of the new design year internationally.
Ventura Lambrate has turned into a must see event for an international audience of design enthusiasts, who are looking specifically for design talent, quality and the newest trends in design. Ventura Lambrate offers young and upcoming designers and artists a platform to showcase their work in a professional environment and to a range of press and industry professionals attending the fair.
The Enterprise Collective, part of University of the arts London (UAL) which works with Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon colleges to connect and collaborate with industry, facilitated UAL’S Participation in the project. They invited applications from recent and current students to participate in the event, and students submitted their proposed projects and designs. The selected students demonstrated in their work not only a strength of concept, design and realisation but also how the boundaries between artistic and design disciplines can be flexible. The quality of the submissions was astounding; the Enterprise collective’s final selection of 20 students formed ‘Congregation’.
There was a great diversity within the selection, with students presenting a range of products from fashion accessories, to furniture, lighting and toys. What tied the work together was an excellence in all aspects of design process, from concept through to finished product.
Two graduates from Camberwell College of Arts BA 3D Design presented their work at the show. Harry Owen, a recent graduate of BA 3D Design is London based and has set up his own company ‘Owen Leather’ that specialises in traditional leather-working techniques commonly associated with the saddlery and case-making trades. Whilst studying at Camberwell, Harry developed a strong ethical stance rooted in the belief that designing products with greater longevity is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.
Harry’s objective is to design objects that people can bond with and grow with in time, natural leather is the perfect material for this as it gains a beautiful patina unique to the user.
Also participating is Karthik Poduval. Karthik is interested in furniture and food design, his products often involve taking objects, and sounds that interest him out of context and reapplying them in interesting and functional ways. Karthik showcased two products at the event: The room for two stool and The cake cutter.
The Room for Two Stool was initially born out of an interest in creating space-saving furniture for both public and domestic use in our increasingly crowded cities, but in use, becomes a fun and innovative way to share space -rather than save it. The stool is sleek and modular – made from only 8 different components – while still being sturdy and thoughtfully designed. The materials of his product are all locally sourced and the parts made by British Manufacturers.
Karthiks accompanying work ‘The Cake Cutter’ is made out of grade 304 stainless steel with oak handles. Karthik believes that the objects within the kitchen that we grow closest to are the ones that age with us like wooden spoons or wood handled knives. Although cutting cake is usually quite a delicate job, his piece is a more solid object, sometimes humorously compared to a butcher’s knife. This was a conscious decision to see how an object with these connotations would be received in a totally different context.
The Cake Cutter is soon to be stocked in Anthropologie and Liberty’s. Karthik graduated from Camberwell College of Art’s BA 3D Design course. Since then, he has set up a South London based Design practice and works on freelance projects. Wallpaper magazine recently wrote a feature on Karthiks cake cutter and deemed him one of 2014’s top design graduates.
When asked why he participated in the event Kathihik described it as “A really brilliant opportunity presented by UAL.” He said “I am really proud to be an alumni to represent CCW. Milan is really the most prestigious location to be part of a design festival and I could only dream of having work here when I started university! In fact I came here in my foundation year and never considered the opportunity would present itself. But not only had UAL prepared me to produce work good enough to show, it had provided me with the chance to do so!”
